Welcome To the Motherlode Lodge

Located in the Historic Gold Mining District

Welcome to the Motherlode Lodge. This lovely historical rustic true Alaskan lodge is located just three miles below the Independence Mine & on the banks of the Little Susitna River in the pristine wilderness of Hatcher Pass.

In February 1942 Victor Cottini Built a small 12'x12" dwelling, called the Little Susitna Roadhouse & three small cabins for lodging. In the spring when the snow began to melt, Cottini discovered that the dwelling was too close to the river and as a result he moved it to it's present site. Cottini's son Jim, helped his father enlarge the lodge to a 12'x24' dwelling and added the upstairs. Jim and his wife Pia, spent their first winter in one of the cabins that still stands near the river; here they ran the lodge, restaurant and taxi service for the miners.

Over the years the property changed hands along with names for the lodge. In 1984 two large wings were added to the lodge increasing the guestrooms to 14 and a large banquet room. Due to the difficulty to power the lodge it closed in 1987 and sat lifeless until 1991 when local resident Jill Reese re-opened the lodge under the name of The Motherlode Lodge. We invite you to visit the lodge for a great Alaskan experiance. The lodge operates on its own generator power system and sewer treatment plant. The water supply is from a glacier fed artesian well , beneath the lodge. The lodge is open all seasons.
